What are your thoughts on cultural practices that people perceptions on mental illnesses, in some regions maybe based on witch craft or other unworldly practices...I see it every day, when patients comes in for diagnosis and assessment, family members often times is of this view... I am confused on this matter,,what are your thoughts...
I have an academic background in psychology (teacher/researcher), so I don't have any applied clinical experience to draw upon—this is purely my own view. Mental illness has a long history of being interpreted through spiritual or supernatural frameworks, and from what you describe, this perspective is still alive. I imagine this creates confusion and resistance when trying to introduce clinical or evidence-based explanations.
I think it’s important to approach these beliefs with sensitivity, acknowledging that cultural practices shape people’s perceptions of mental health. Understanding and respecting these cultural contexts, while gradually educating and introducing more scientific explanations, will hopefully help you bridge the gap between traditional beliefs and modern mental health practices.
Thank you Sir for your response, and I do share the same beliefs and views of you....on educating people on the delusions of cultural or supernatural practices in psychiatry will take a lot of time, focus and energy, not that this perspective can't be eradicated, but it is deeply embedded in some cultures...
Blessings and respect for your feedback it is greatly appreciated....
