What an amazing article! As I continued reading, I realized how very complicated the brain is. It's fascinating how the mysterious little structure in our head continues to surprise us each day. Extremely well written and insightful. Looking forward to more such intellectual pieces from you!

Love all of this. Seeing psychologically processes as tools is a reframe that I’ve found particularly helpful with clients, and myself. To see our mental processes as serving a purpose means they don’t have any necessary or required meaning, however much we can ascribe such to them. This leads to have a flexibility in responses to them. I can have a moment of nostalgia and, rather than necessarily believing everything that comes along for the feeling ride, I can acknowledge that it’s a reconstruction, and that it serves a purpose of drawing my attention to a positive value. I can then use that to move forward with behavior that supports that value, without getting caught up in attempting to recreate a past that never existed in the “pure” sense that nostalgia feels like.
